We would also like to congratulate Lake Owen regular CJ Kelly on his recent 1st place finish at King of the Groms Woodward Qualifiers.
Skateboarder C.J. Kelly qualified Aug. 22 for the Eighth Annual King of the Groms in the Expert Street Division in Woodward, Pa.
Kelly, 12, of Algonquin, qualified to skate at the Kind of the Groms Finals on Feb. 19-21 at 3rd Lair Skatepark in Golden Valley, Minn. At Woodward, Grom refers to a young skateboarder. The King of the Groms competition is open to skateboarders 12 and younger with divisions from beginner to expert.
Kelly, who skates out of Yeah Board Shop in Bartlett, also placed first in Expert Mini Ramp, third in Expert Bowl and was named the skateboarder with the best style in the competition.
Kelly said that, although he concentrated on the street division, he also enjoyed competing in bowl and mini ramp. The diversity also helps him in street.
“In the street there’s ramps, transitions and a good variety of everything,” Kelly said. “Being good [in other areas] helps a lot.”
Getting the top style award is also a big deal at the competition, Kelly said, because it showed who was not only doing the tricks but also “who’s making it look good the best.”
At Woodward, Kelly said he was trying to put some variety in his routine to showcase his versatility. Some of the best tricks he hit were a Backslide 360 on the pyramid and a frontslide lip slide on the rail.
“You can’t really read the judge’s mind. You’ve got to do what feels good, what you do best,” Kelly said. “Hopefully they’ll like it.”
Kelly also competed at the King of Groms last year in Minnesota where he placed second to Bong Gause from Jacksonville, Fla. Gause and Kelly have become very good friends.
Skateboarding to Kelly, even though he competes at a very high level, is about having fun. He is looking forward to competing in Minnesota in February, but mostly to connect with the friends he has made in the sport all over the country.
“I want to be confident, but it’s all about having fun. As long as all of my friends are there and I’m at least skating pretty good [I’ll be happy],” Kelly said. “I would like to win though still.”
From time to time we allow resident pro Falco Baltys Instruct one of out groups. when ever he is in charge he makes sure to blend his two favorite passions, skating and videos…this week Falco put together a video edit of his instruction group consisting of Elliott, Dan, Quin, Kevin, Mac, Benny, Tanner, Chase, Jordan, Hunter, Reece.
Enjoy the film.
Congratulations to Jamison Brenner on Friday night’s best trick contest. Taking home a one year subscription to Skateboard mag due to a buttery backside big spin down the 6 set. Turns out that entering the advanced contest just to warm up for the best trick is a good idea.
Congratulations Jamison
